The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed edge rusher Alex Highsmith to a new five-year, $70 million contract, a team source confirmed to The Athletic on Wednesday. Here’s what you need to know.

Highsmith, 25, was entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract.

The deal includes $28 million guaranteed over the first three years, according to a team source.

Highsmith is coming off a breakout 2022 season where he logged a career-high 14 1/2 sacks and a league-high five forced fumbles in 17 games.

Why the Steelers extended Highsmith

It wasn’t a matter of if more than a matter of when the Steelers extended the soon-to-be 26-year-old. That’s how much the Steelers thought of Highsmith. Highsmith is coming off the best season of his career. But he did that mostly with T.J. Watt in the lineup, managing just three of his 14 1/2 sacks in the seven games without him.
